ASCII maps integers 0–127 to control codes and printable characters. Bytes 128–255 are not standardized ASCII; this page shows the common Windows-1252 (Western European) code page for that range.

ASCII vs Unicode vs UTF-8

How many characters are in ASCII?

Standard ASCII defines 128 characters (0–127). An 8-bit byte can hold 256 values; the upper half is code-page dependent.

What is the ASCII code for space?

Decimal 32, hex 0x20, binary 00100000.

What is the difference between ASCII and UTF-8?

ASCII is a 7-bit character set. UTF-8 encodes Unicode and uses the same single byte for 0–127, so plain English ASCII text is valid UTF-8.

What are control characters?

Codes 0–31 and 127 are non-printing controls (tab, line feed, carriage return, escape, delete, and similar).

Why does € show as 128 here?

In Windows-1252, byte 0x80 is the euro sign. Other code pages map 0x80 differently or not at all. Prefer Unicode U+20AC in modern text.

How do I look up a code quickly?
