What this converter does
Letter grades describe a single course (or assignment band). Grade points are the numeric values those letters carry on a published scale. This tool:
- Converts a letter → grade points on a chosen scale.
- Optionally multiplies by credits to show quality points for one course.
- Shows an example percentage band for that letter (not a transcript %).
- Lets you flip to GPA → letter when you already have an average.
It does not replace your school’s catalog, and it does not compute a multi-course GPA by itself—use the GPA Calculator for that. Confirm whether A+ is 4.33, 4.3, or 4.00, and whether the cumulative GPA is capped at 4.00 separately.
How to convert a letter grade to grade points
- Select the scale that matches your transcript (or the closest match).
- Choose the letter exactly as reported (including + / − when your school uses them).
- Read the grade-point value from the result panel.

Scales explained
Plus/minus 4.33
Common college map including A+, A−, B+, etc. Default A+ = 4.33 (some schools use 4.3).
Flat 4.0
Only A / B / C / D / F. Use when plus/minus are not on the transcript scale.
Linear 5.0
Not offered in Letter → GPA. There is no universal 5.0 letter-to-points mapping. Some institutions publish their own 5.0 tables (MIT: A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, F=0). CalculatorX Linear 5.0 is a generic numeric normalization for GPA → letter, not a school-specific grading policy. Use GPA to Letter Grade when you already have a 5.0 numeric GPA.
Percentage, letter, and GPA together
Syllabi often publish all three. A typical U.S. pattern (not universal):

Always prefer the cutoffs printed for your course. The same 3.67 points for A- can pair with 90–92% at one school and 85–89.5% at another. International transcripts may need a school-specific map to U.S. letters before using this table.
Practical tips
- Prefer the student handbook over any web default when they disagree.
- Confirm whether A+ is 4.33, 4.3, or 4.00, and whether the cumulative GPA is capped at 4.00 separately from the A+ point value.
- E is sometimes used instead of F—treat it as failing (0) unless your catalog says otherwise.
- For applications, report the numeric GPA your registrar prints; a single letter is only a coarse label for an average.

What GPA is an A-?
Commonly 3.67 on a plus/minus 4.0-family scale (sometimes rounded to 3.7).
What GPA is a B+?
Commonly 3.33 (sometimes written 3.3).
Is A+ always 4.33?
No. Many colleges assign A+ = 4.00, the same as A. Others assign 4.3 or 4.33. A 4.33 table can still cap the cumulative GPA at 4.00—those are different policies. Check your academic catalog.
How do letter grades become a term GPA?
Convert each letter to points, multiply by credits, sum those quality points, then divide by total counted credits. Use the GPA Calculator for a full course list.
Do P/NP or W grades count?
Usually no. Pass / no-pass, incomplete, and withdrawal are typically excluded from the GPA average.
What if my school only reports percentages?
First map % → letter with your syllabus cutoffs, then convert letter → grade points. Do not assume a universal %↔GPA formula.
Can one letter represent a whole GPA?
A single letter is one course’s published points. A GPA is the credit-weighted average of many courses—use the GPA Calculator for a term or cumulative average, then GPA → letter only as a rough band.
Where is Linear 5.0?
Letter → GPA only offers plus/minus 4.33 and flat 4.0. There is no universal 5.0 letter-to-points mapping. Some schools publish their own 5.0 tables (for example MIT: A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, F=0). Why is the example % for A- 90–92%?
That band is a common U.S. syllabus convention for the letter A-. Other schools using the same 3.67 points publish different cutoffs—for example A- at 85–89.5%.
What if I enter negative credits?
Negative credits are a validation error. Leave the field blank to omit quality points (credits and quality points are null). Enter 0 to record 0 credits and 0 quality points.
